Removing devices and events (classic)

The Nexthink platform effectively oversees the compilation of data from Collector instances through a robust data processing layer, seamlessly delivering information to both the Engine (classic) and the cloud-native data storage layer.

Automatic removal of records

The data processing layer subdivides the incoming data into two categories: events and objects. Both of them are associated with a property called the time to live (TTL) period.

Nexthink offers three possible time periods for retaining the data:

• 7 days

• 14 days

• 30 days (default)

Contact Nexthink Support to request a change.

By default, the events older than 30 days are deleted. The system considers objects as expired when it does not record any activity during the TTL period, then deletes them and their associated events.

Manual removal of devices using Finder

Nexthink Finder is a Windows-only desktop application whose functionality is now available within the Nexthink web interface. Nexthink can now be used directly from a browser and most functions no longer require an additional desktop application.

To manually remove a device:

1. Log in to Finder with administrative rights.

2. Type the name of the device in the Search field.

3. Right-click the device in the results of the search and select Drill-down.

4. Right-click the device listed and select Edit... (or type Ctrl+Alt+E). The Edit device dialog shows up.

5. Select the option remove from the list Storage at the bottom of the dialog.

6. Click Apply to mark the device for removal.

Finder still displays the device until the Nexthink platform removes it from the database. The system removes the devices from the data storage layer that have not been active for the last 24 hours and whose storage policy is set to remove.

Uninstall Collector from the devices being removed to stop them from sending new activity data. Failing to do so results in the system not removing the device from the data storage layer or, if the device was inactive for more than 24 hours and actually removed from the records, recreating the device in the systems as soon as the Nexthink instance receives new data from it.

Once the device is tagged as remove, it almost immediately frees one license from the pool.

Automatic removal of inactive devices from Engine

In the event that:

• A device is inactive for more than 90 days.
  You can ask Nexthink Support to adjust the value.

• There are no events associated with the device left in the database of Engine.

Engine purges all the data related to the device and automatically frees one license from the pool.
