Recording Walkthrough guides

The guide recording feature in Adopt simplifies the process of creating Walkthrough-type guides. Instead of manually adding each step, you can start a recording session and perform actions directly within an application. Adopt automatically captures each interaction and converts it into a step.

Understanding guide recording

AI automatically labels each step based on the element type and action, identifying when a user clicks a button, enters text, or navigates to a new page. It also recognizes the overall process and names the guide accordingly. For example, if an admin records the conversion of a lead to an opportunity, the generated guide name will be "Convert lead to opportunity (Recording)".

Step titles and labels are generated automatically (currently in English). Completion triggers and key pages are set during the recording process. Most guide settings are predefined, so after recording, you only need to fine-tune individual steps in the editor.

This approach reduces the effort required to build guides and ensures that the recorded steps accurately reflect the real user journey. This feature is well-suited for creating onboarding flows, process instructions, or any guided experience that mirrors how users interact with your applications.

Recording a guide

The system displays the ✦ sparkles icon to indicate AI-generated content or insights. AI is evolving rapidly and delivering great insights, but it can still make mistakes. Nexthink recommends validating your results to ensure accuracy and support informed decision-making.

To record a guide, follow the steps below:

  1. In your chosen application, click the Nexthink extension icon.

  2. At the bottom of the extension window, select Record new guide.

  1. While the recording is in progress, a pop-up will appear at the top-right of your browser window indicating the number of currently recorded steps. You can use the Pause button to temporarily stop capturing steps and Resume when ready to continue.

    • Optionally, click the move window icon to move the pop-up to the top-left corner of the window, or move it back to the top-right corner.

  1. Perform the workflow you want to capture in your application. Adopt automatically records your actions as individual steps.

Hovering over elements displays a CSS outline while guide recording is active. Ensure you interact with the larger part of an element for improved recording stability.

  1. When finished, select Stop in the recording pop-up to stop recording your guide.

Guide recording supports a maximum of 40 steps. If you reach the limit, the process ends automatically.

Refining the recording

After you finish recording, the guide is saved and you will be given the chance to review a list of your recorded steps. You can select Confirm, automatically redirecting you to the Adopt editor so you can edit or make changes to the guide. Alternatively, you can select Start over to restart the process, or Cancel to discard the recording.

The newly recorded guide is unpublished by default.

Each recorded interaction appears as an individual step that you can edit to improve clarity and consistency.

You can:

  • Rename steps to make the actions clearer.

  • Reorder steps using the arrow controls.

  • Delete irrelevant steps that do not contribute to the workflow.

  • Merge or split steps to simplify complex sequences.

  • Reselect specific elements in case you selected an unintended element while recording a step.

These edits help ensure the guide reflects the intended user journey and is easy to follow. Refer to Defining walkthrough Step for more information on editing your guide steps.
